My Working Philosophy

These definitions are the foundation of my nutrition counseling strategies...

My philosophy flows from these definitions and is based on what I’ve learned from my formal education, countless contemporary authors, my family, friends, personal life experiences, and those of over 3,000 clients with whom I’ve worked.

  • Food Attitudes:  This is our fundamental belief about specific foods and food in general.  Our attitude is our own unique perception of how food is meant to sustain us in mind, body and spirit.  These attitudes develop from our earliest encounters with food and the people providing it and sharing it with us.
  • Food Preferences:  These develop right along with our food attitude and are strongly connected to our earliest food perceptions as well as the attitudes of those with whom we ate meals.  This is where each of us is an expert!
  • Good Health:  The state of mind, body, and spirit that promotes the optimal ability to live life to the fullest.
  • Healthy Body Weight:  The composition of the human body that allows for good health.

Notice that there are NO numbers or measurements.  That doesn’t mean that “anything goes.”  It means that each person needs to be their own expert on their personal health.  However, each person’s definition is highly complex and unique.

My style of counseling helps individuals define their unique food attitudes and food preferences, as well as develop goals to solve any disconnect that undermines their vision of good health

A healthy body weight is one of the most significant contributors to the state of good health.  If a person is to attain a healthy body weight, they may first need to develop goals to modify their food attitudes and preferences.  This is NOT an easy task and requires commitment, focus, feedback and SUPPORT.

Hence, I employ a collaborative approach to a healthy life…using principles of healthy eating, exercise and stress reduction. Together we define what is obstructing the path to good health and determine goals to overcome these deterrents.  My role is to assist you in developing these goals, provide education on nutrition concepts that you may need to help you strategize your approach, provide technique options that you can employ to remain focused and to give timely feedback and support as you make the necessary steps toward a healthier life.
